This is going to look out of left field for anyone that actually follows this blog, so the background is that I have been volunteering with Child Advocates since November. My case has been closed since July, but I’ve keeping up with the family who will be adopting their nephew. I also got a new case in August and the mother of the family in question is looking to divorce a father who has been deported. In the process of investigating, I tapped into the knowledge bases of my mother (a lifelong social worker — CIS, Star of Hope, Headstart, Harris County–ECI) and some of her co-workers. When I got all this information back in my inbox and dutifully taken notes, I thought I would be remiss if all this info stayed in my inbox and didn’t get out there to the universe.

The conversation started with me asking if anyone had the contact info for “Legal Aid” — which is a proper resource within Harris County for subsidized legal help. (Google is painfully unhelpful with this query). I’m not familiar with how it works, but one of my cases, the mother’s trying to get a divorce from her deported husband.
On an unrelated case I had a DFPS (CPS) case worker working on something with regard to a recently placed child’s immigration status and was curious what she might be poking around in. He had been placed with his aunt, a US resident, but he is undocumented.

So, I got the below responses [my commentary in brackets]*:

“Here is a link that explains the [Services to Children and Families Who Are Not U.S. Citizens]:
http://www.dfps.state.tx.us/handbooks/CPS/Files/CPS_pg_6580.jsp

It looks as if the child may be allowed to stay with relatives and depending on circumstances an opportunity to become a citizen, but it seems they have to let the consulate know of the child in custody, first.

[Turns out that DFPS/CPS is handling the notification of the consulate through their attorneys; also because the child is in the Permanent Managing Conservatorship (PMC) of the State of Texas, he has no risk of deportation. --per DFPS)]

If the child was placed on a temporary basis in the Aunt’s custody, no changing of immigration status will occur. He will be in limbo till it’s determined the guardian of child is going to be his permanent guardian.

[DFPS confirmed that this is the case, and as mentioned above, his immigration will not change since the State of Texas retains PMC.]

If the child was placed permanently in the Aunt’s custody, a court decree stating that she is now the legal guardian, is all she needs to begin the filing of change of status from undocumented (EWI) to a permanent resident for her nephew. CPS may not pay for the status change. [In this case, CPS/DFPS is appears to be handling all parts associated with this process -- updates to come once paperwork is approved and filed with the State].

Catholic Charities helps with these type of cases. For a low fee to do all necessary paperwork for family reunification. The family must first attend a Charla, which is held on Tuesdays, to meet with an attorney who will review the case and decide to pick up the case. Catholic Charities is well respected with INS and are prompt in their work.

Types of Cases Handled by Cabrini (a service of Catholic Charities)

How to Become a Client – Immigration Charlas

En Español

In order to become a client of Cabrini Center, individuals must first attend a “charla,” an informational session regarding immigration law. After attending the session, each person will have the opportunity to speak individually with an attorney or accredited representative regarding his or her case. If it is a type of case that Cabrini Center may be able to handle, then the individual can make an appointment to come back for a full intake.

There is no cost to attend a charla and receive an individual legal consultation. Cabrini Center’s charlas are offered the first three Tuesdays of each month at 1:00 PM. The first and third Tuesdays are given in Spanish, and the second Tuesday is given in English. Charlas take place at Catholic Charities’ main office, located at 2900 Louisiana Street, Houston, TX 77006.

If you are attending the charla, we ask that you please:

Do not bring children. Having young children at the charla interferes with our ability to give the presentation and have a quiet room in which to provide legal advice.

We can only accommodate the first 100 people on a first come, first served basis. If you arrive after the sign-in sheet is full, you’ll be asked to return to another charla presentation. You will speak with a legal representative in order of your arrival.

Be prepared to spend two hours or more at the charla. Because we have a limited number of legal staff to accommodate a large crowd, please be ready to wait your turn to speak with an attorney or accredited representative.

Cabrini Center handles a wide range of immigration cases, which include:

Family-based visa petitions, which assist United States Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents to reunite with family members and assist immigrant family members adjust their status to permanent residence;

Citizenship applications;

Representation in affirmative and defensive asylum proceedings, for individuals who fear persecution in their home country;

For the divorce case:

They call and make an appointment at one of the below organizations for pre-qualification and for presenting their qualifying documentation. There are strict income levels that apply. If there are no children in the marriage, she can divorce for about $500 dollars. Any lawyer in the Spanish-language newspapers can do it. If she is low-income, and has children, then legal aid would be the way to go. They have a waitlist, the majority of them. If there is a case of domestic abuse and documented, a police report: she may be eligible for Victim’s Assistance Fund to cover her living cost and probably the divorce cost.:

These are a few Legal Aid orgs. Here are the different types of help that can be provided by Texas free legal aid organizations:

FULL REPRESENTATION – by a lawyer or a legal advocate in court or at a hearing at a government agency.

LEGAL CLINIC – briefly speak with an attorney about your legal problem in person.

BRIEF ADVICE – in person or over the telephone.

SELF-HELP MATERIALS – educational materials such as fact sheets and brochures.

PRO SE CLINICS – learn how you can “help yourself” with a particular legal problem.

OTHER – workshops, referrals to private attorneys, and other services.

Today was a nice day for a walk, and some meetings and some reminders and some work.

It was a jam packed day. One of those days where you ask yourself what the hell you did all day. It was shortly before I asked myself this question that my calendar reminded me that today was the day that Christina and me begin our regular walk. We headed down Nicholson up in the Heights, then back up to her place where we hung with her brother talking education, “Waiting for Superman”, and laptops for kids in the ghetto. I’m going to talk to some folks at Google (thanks to some friendly secondary connections), and make this thing happen. Think Negroponte with some tracking and metrics. I’m so about this idea with this secondary education kick that I’m on.

This carried over into a Houston at SXSW meeting with Grace, Tim and Brian. This is really shaping up. Art Cars, Film, Artists, taco trucks, AIGA. Kick ass.

Grace and I hung around afterwards and I got to, for the first time, articulate my personal agenda as it relates to the countries failing educational system. Basically, I came back from Africa with the intent of infuse every conversation that I have access to, whether it be, Child Advocates, Creativity in Houston, speaking to kids, C2 Creative, Houston at SXSW, the film series, Block Party, etc, with some relevance for junior high and high school kids.

I’ve recently realized that with the current unprecedented cuts in Education spending, that the populous has a large responsibility to its students. We spend a good deal of time addressing the needs of the hungry, the homeless, the financially needy, but we shouldn’t stop there. There is significant work to be done at a deeper level. Where the public school system is failing the nation’s kids, we could be preventing the problems so often afflicting the under-educated adults in our city and country.

It also occurred to me that we are the products of some potential bubbles. Whether it’s a social media bubble, or a capital “C” Community bubble,– a lot of our current paradigms are specific to our generation. If we have any desire to sustain the momentum that we’ve been able to achieve we need to look beyond our peer groups and usher in, and play example to next generations. The social aspects of what we do, the “greater good” mentality, the coopetition sentiment, the open source, free-to-all ideas are unique to gen Y and millenials. If we have any hope for this to sustain, we can’t continue to ignore those who will proceed us.

This will not hold a candle to it, but he asked me to upload so that he can size me up for a possible collaboration (suspects the self-conscious me). But, you know, I’m all about putting it all out there. From 1999 to 2001 I produced this business…

So the day started off innocently enough: web content meeting for the Hispanic Family Initiative, planning for their Town Hall (bringing together the city’s community-based orgs to join together for a grant proposal into Obama’s recent $500 million allocation of funds to CBOs).

From there I ran to the video production classroom of my friend Bryan L at historically low-income and Hispanic, Jefferson Davis High School to talk about goals and success. The kids were super responsive, had great questions and made me think. From there neighboring classroom for web design invited me over and I gave the preso there. I walked away inspired and with a million new ideas for how to make my presentation even more relevant for folks.

I was blown away. The enthusiasm and motivation with which these guys teach their classes is nothing less than admirable (more on that in another post.) I met a musician. Greatness.

Then I was off to meet with a potential new client who plays the “ideal parents role” in family homes where the parents are less than ideal. The impact her org is having in Brazoria county is amazing (invited her to the Town Hall, natch).

Then all of this hit me in the face. The opportunity to help these people is empowering. I identified with each of their causes and I came back to the office more motivated than I’ve ever been before. Spectacular what people are doing for one another. I can’t keep up, and all of this bring such meaning to what I do as an individual.

It reminded me, frankly, of why I came into this business and why I even live. Impact. Make differences. To not sit idly. Proud to be a part of this community. Proud to have a reason to care.

Something about a hexagon that I love. Maybe the symmetry or faceout square shape.

Anywho, I extruded them here in 3 dimensions. I liked the color palette much better before the shading. I’d have tweaked if the 10 mins wasn’t up.

I can’t tell if this is helping or hurting for me to so easily stop on a design because a clock runs out. Hmm…

thewhether: haaaaay
dj raip: yo
thewhether: wrapping last line of an email… 2 secs
dj raip: ‘k
thewhether: ok. gonna finish it later, it just got longer
thewhether: when are you gonna shadow me?
thewhether: today would have been a good day
dj raip: really?
thewhether: yes. like 19 hats today
dj raip: i need some heads up and i’ll take a day off
thewhether: and some major client management. my least favorite part of the gig
thewhether: or project management better said
dj raip: speaking of hats what do you think is the most challenging this of being your own boss?
thewhether: ok. how do we start this thing
dj raip: i just did
thewhether: the most challenging thing could be managing relationships
thewhether: keeping a team in tact while also keeping clients and their projects in tact
dj raip: how personal do think relationships with clients should be?
thewhether: everything’s a delicate balance between client sentiments, employee sentiments, business sentiments
thewhether: it’s far more emotion based that one might think
thewhether: I prefer an arm’s distance
thewhether: Once you cross a line something is lost
thewhether: whether it’s your perceived value to the client, or your respect for them as “client” and not “buddy/friend”
dj raip: what about the team? i mean you guys hang out alot at work. do you hang out also outside of it or are you like
“i’ve been stairing at your ugly face all day i dont want too any longer”
thewhether: I think we all manage our time away from one another differently. being in just month 6, I’ve noticed that
we spend weekend with little to no contact unless there’s a reason
thewhether: that said, we definitely hangout still. every friday is our internal meeting
dj raip: i think that’s pretty healthy
thewhether: that involves booze
dj raip: haha
dj raip: sweet sweet booze.
dj raip: anyhoo
thewhether: booze good
dj raip: so what crystalizes your team ?
thewhether: hmm…
dj raip: what is their strongets asset (as a team)
dj raip: what is they weakest
thewhether: is booze still on the table?
thewhether: one at a time here…
thewhether:
dj raip: sure. always
dj raip: booze
thewhether: we’re all pretty passionate about making this company a success, so that we share in common
dj raip: k one at a time
dj raip: cool
thewhether: and we all want to do great things
thewhether: that’s work and personal
dj raip: but what is the meaning of success as a company? is this vision the same for all of you?
thewhether: I think success means creating things that we’re proud of.
thewhether: When we can get paid well to do things we’re proud of, I think we’ll call that success
dj raip: do you regret not jumping off the deep end earlier
dj raip: meaning having your own gig
thewhether: No, not really.
thewhether: I’ve always had my own gig, but it was just sidelined by whatever job I had at the time. I
dj raip: true
thewhether: was full time freelance for 2.5 years before 2.5 years at TI
thewhether: TI was essential
dj raip: what do you think your team lacks?
thewhether: I had to learn how the client views the agency
thewhether: As the Creative Director (CD), I’m probably hardest on our design
thewhether: To be honest TI was great, but it was also 2.5 years that I was outside the design game
thewhether: It really warped some of my design sensibilities and creativity
dj raip: what has been your own greatest achivement product-wise you have done up until now?
thewhether: I am working everyday to exercise that muscle back to what it used to be
thewhether: hmm..good question
dj raip: i think following the 365 days of creating is a great exercise in working that muscle
dj raip: it’s kinda like a punk song or haiku but of design
thewhether: Azur Salon is a great success story
dj raip: a burst of energy
thewhether: HA!
thewhether: true that.
dj raip: tell me about azur
thewhether: yesterday was my first day not to do it

thewhether: I was sick and my computer was dead.

thewhether: I will do 2 designs tonight

thewhether: Azur I will write an entire Case Study on

dj raip: (excuses excuses)

dj raip: cool

dj raip: you should post it on your blog for sure

thewhether: they were 6 stylists and I have watched them grow to 13, expand their space and get ready to open a second location all in less than 3 years

dj raip: wow

thewhether: and it’s undeniably ALL from their use of the internet

dj raip: is that’s where you get your hair did?

thewhether: They gross nearly 300% what they did when I first began working with them

thewhether: yessir

thewhether: james is the shit

thewhether: although I think he gave me cliff’s haircut

dj raip: yeah i like your gay sailor haircut

dj raip: i keed i keed

thewhether: jealous I thought of it second.

dj raip: indeed

dj raip: so

thewhether: so

dj raip: how much red bull do you go through in a week

dj raip: on average

thewhether: shit. 1-2 a day

thewhether: but I’m trying to cut back

dj raip: what about the company as a whole?

thewhether: maybe that’s just the cold ridden congested me talking

dj raip: per week

thewhether: 1-2 / day times 3

thewhether: that includes weekends for me

dj raip: do you guys have a ‘local’ watering hole?

thewhether: dont know about everson or cliff

dj raip: or coffee shop?

thewhether: wow.

thewhether: we’re trying to find our bearings in the new hood

dj raip: for the company (not just for you RUDZ)

thewhether: we had shiloh club in the heights

thewhether: we don’t have a new neighborhood bar

dj raip: yeah that place is classy ( a dump )

thewhether: we kinda stick here

thewhether: fridge is always stocked

thewhether: lone star

thewhether: and our loft mate has classed us up a bit with some bourbon and st arnolds

dj raip: what’s new in the wall of fame/shame

dj raip: oooh

dj raip: moving on up!

thewhether: fame….RDA mailer that showed up a couple weeks ago.

thewhether: @clints’s business card is very cool

thewhether: letterpress.

thewhether: so nice

thewhether: there was something else and I can’t find it now.

thewhether: shame…

thewhether: well…not much recently

thewhether: we still need to get that wall up….when are you coming by??

dj raip: you like networking. what for you is the best ‘e’ tool to achive supermaximum networking

?

dj raip: soon

thewhether: ha

thewhether: your computer

thewhether: then your blackberry

thewhether: then your face

dj raip: does it have to be a human face?

thewhether: and behind that face better be something worth hearing

thewhether: no, any face will work

thewhether: keep it memorable

dj raip: hmmm

dj raip: so when are you guys having an opening party?

thewhether: good question.

thewhether: so many things to get in order.

dj raip: i’ll bring my god-like liver to it

thewhether: maybe just a close friendly open house is in order soon

dj raip: i hear ya

thewhether: I wanna blow shit up at the big one, but we’re too busy to plan it

dj raip: maybe have a cookie bake-off

thewhether: we should hire a planner for that

thewhether: dude. if you bring helvetica shaped pot cookies you will have a permanent seat on the hall of fame

dj raip: do you think the move to the new place was good?

dj raip: haha

thewhether: un. doubt. ed. ly.

thewhether: Should you mention how this interview came to be?

dj raip: you tell me i was drunk (as usual…)

thewhether: you version will be more interesting

dj raip: k

dj raip: well i had interview a friend for his website as he interviews peeps. so i thought “no one has interviewed this jerkface for his website, i should to it”

dj raip: then i thought of you (another jerk-face with his own website) and bam! we are here now

dj raip: plu add like a 300 beers to the above and you get the gist of it

thewhether: and i ate it up, because I love anything where we just talk about me

thewhether: oh yes. beer

thewhether: we also interviewed strangers that day

thewhether: and you interviewed @gunsandtacos

dj raip: haha that’s right! b/c you are a narciccist evil-genius

dj raip: i just totally massacred the work narcicist btw…

dj raip: indeed! that was fun and a great disaster

dj raip: almost ended in fisticuffs (not really)

dj raip: interesting guy that guy

dj raip: and so are you kind sir

dj raip: but!

thewhether: jess…

dj raip: i am really trying to make this interview a good one and not only ask you crazy questions like:

dj raip: how many midgets do you think mr. t can bench press

dj raip: i want to derive inspiration to the felow peeps that go to your site

dj raip: and learn a thing or two about you, your work, your teammates

thewhether: k sorry, the maintenance guys showed up to fix the leak we had today

dj raip: so

thewhether: i’m back

dj raip: how many midgets do yuo think mr. can bench press btw

thewhether: definitely

thewhether: i mean, it really depends on his setup

thewhether: if they’re like all in a box, at least like 3-4 (he’s kind of old now)

dj raip: it’s a converted dungeon-slash-gym

thewhether: if they’re not in a container of some kind and just all hanging about, maybe 2

dj raip: they do have dense bones indeed…

thewhether: if they lay flat on his hands, I mean, he’s gonna drop them

thewhether: yeah, I’m gonna say 3

thewhether: full-grown ones

dj raip: so what do you say we call this part 1 of the interview?

thewhether: did you see this from last night? http://twitter.com/thewhether/status/8948117916

thewhether: don’t even know what to do with that really.

thewhether: it was jarring to say the least

dj raip: i am checking it righ now

thewhether: oooo…dual monitors.

thewhether: so fancy

dj raip: i wish..

dj raip: i am in bed with dual laptops though

thewhether: oh really…

dj raip: i think i just got my next screensaver!!

thewhether: “sick day”

thewhether: ?

dj raip: yup

thewhether: medical massacre on your brain

dj raip: liver

dj raip: indeed

thewhether: alcohol was the weapon of choice

dj raip: it always wins

thewhether: ok. so part one down.

dj raip: cool!

thewhether: i’m gonna go publish it now.

dj raip: i think it went well. fun and light

dj raip: nothing too crazy

thewhether: you got all serious from the get go

thewhether: you went all barbara walters on me

thewhether: i’m surprised you didnt try to make me cry

dj raip: i did. as i said i wanted something good not just crazyness

dj raip: i will in part two

dj raip: and anger-punch the air

thewhether: bring it. i’m a sappy old woman inside

thewhether: [end interview]

dj raip: the insides of a babushka

dj raip: (add the babushka!!!!)
